Vantage Point

IMDB information

Metacritic score

I always enjoy movies that take a little care to be different and don’t pander to or ‘feed’ the audience too much. Vantage Point manages all this whilst remaining a fairly standard Hollywood blockbuster type movie. The story of a Presidential assasination is played out from several different viewpoints, each one giving us a different view and a little more information as to what is going on. The grizzled veteran bodyguard, the American tourist who gets caught in the middle of the story, to the President himself, each section reveals another twist in the tale before it’s all finally pulled together in a frantic closing section.

Given the restrictions of this method, I was surprised at how well the characters and storyline are slowly filled out. Admittedly there isn’t much room for the actors to be anything other than competent (Sigourney Weaver probably wrapped her entire sessions in a few days), but the assembled cast is experienced enough to give reasonable performances that sit well with the framework of the movie, even if some of the scenes become a little far-fetched (there is a little too much "American pride" at work here on occasion).

Despite the repetition, the pace of the opening sections remains high and as you aren’t being spoonfed too much, you are constantly scanning the screen for information. I’m not sure exactly how many takes each scene took, but there had to be multiple units shooting different people at the same time as you can see characters in the background of some shots that certainly don’t look like they’ve been re-shot.

Of course it’s worth bearing in mind that this is a Hollywood blockbuster, so whilst the style and execution of the movie is well handled, the story is a little predictable. Still, I consider the suspension of disbelief to be an essential part of the cinema going experience and if you like a good distraction then I’d happily recommened Vantage Point.

Catching up

Having been off ill for a couple of weeks, almost completely off-line for that time, I’m still catching up with work and my blog reading. The beauty of monitoring RSS feeds is that all I need to do is check through my unread items list in Google Reader and, finally, it’s approaching zero.

Over on the right you can download a file which contains links to all the RSS feeds I monitor (it’s an OPML file and most RSS feed reading applications will be able to import it). That said I am always on the lookout for more good quality blogs in the area of technical communications, design, information development and anything else that may be of interest. If you have any favourites you think I, and everyone else, would enjoy, please let me know by leaving a comment.

There is another reason for this, namely that I’m about to start writing a monthly summary of what is going on in the technical communications blogosphere. And that’s the last time I’ll be using that horrible word.

Needing a diversion

We are considering going to the cinema tonight. Vantage Point looks like a nicely escapist kind of movie to take our minds of the state of our house at the moment, and the hassles we had last night.

I’m not going into the details but suffice to say that I had to fill in an incident report with the Police after a taxi driver (black cab) scrapped along the back of my car trying to get round me and then, after sharing a few choice words, drove off without giving me his details.

Well except for the license plate and cab number on the back of course…

I’d pulled in to the side of the road to let Louise out of the car, it was pouring with rain and we were on a rescue mission to get our niece who wasn’t well. I was sitting with the back end of the car sticking out across a side street, but I’d planned to drop Louise off and then go and find somewhere to park.

The taxi was parked in the side street waiting on a fare. I was trying to reverse to I could pull out, but the traffic behind me wouldn’t let me out, the taxi got a fare and, whilst shouting obscenities out the window at me (apparently I’m a “fucking genius moron”) managed to clip the back of my car.

Livid, I jumped out, as did he. He continued to shout at me whilst I stood at the car door asking him how the hell I was supposed to get out of his road if he wouldn’t let me reverse 2 feet. He started walking towards me, round the back of my car and obviously saw (or THOUGHT) that the damage to my car wasn’t anything, and suddenly he was all “let’s calm down, no problem..” and offered to shake hands.

I hadn’t moved, refused to shake hands and as he started to walk back to his cab I walked round to the back of the car. As I reached it, he was getting back in his cab and driving off which, as the policeman who took the incident report pointed out, means he’s been involved in a car accident and not given his details.

I was within my rights to pull in to let a passenger alight and, frankly, after the way the arrogant tosser acted I hope they take his license off him.

There isn’t too much obvious damage to the car, the paint work will need resprayed, and I’ll be getting it checked out anyway.

It’s one of the few times in my life where I’ve consciously thought, ‘Right, if he takes one more aggressive step towards me, I’ll meet him halfway with my fist’. I was LIVID.

A crap ending to a good day, visiting family, winning the only rugby game that really matters and we’d just sat down to watch 16 Blocks. So, today Louise is out shopping and I’m gonna turn on the Wii, turn the volume up and practise Guitar Hero until my fingers bleed!

Things can only get better

Yesterday:

Kitchen fitters turn up.

Kitchen fitters check the electrics.

Kitchen fitters say we’ll need to get them upgraded.

Kitchen fitters also say that the worktop for the sink area is wrong size, we have 600, should 700.

Kitchen fitters phone warehouse to order new worktop. Earliest it MIGHT be with us is in one week.

Surveyor should’ve checked all this! Louise and Gordon are annoyed.

Gordon will be writing a letter of complaint.

But work still needs done so…

Louise phones electricians.

Electrician comes, looks at job, agrees price and says he’ll turn up tomorrow.

Electrician also says we need to buy more fused switches, one per major appliance due to regulations introduced last year.

Louise and Gordon dash to B&Q to get more switches to match the ones they’ve already bought.

Today (so far):

Gordon went to bank before work to lift cash to pay electrician.

Electrician didn’t turn up.

Gordon can’t write long sentences.

Short sentences are the only way to stop him going ARSEHOLE FUCK BANDIT WANKERS!!!! over and over and over…

UPDATE:
ARSEHOLE FUCK BANDIT WANKERS!!!! ARSEHOLE FUCK BANDIT WANKERS!!!! ARSEHOLE FUCK BANDIT WANKERS!!!! ARSEHOLE FUCK BANDIT WANKERS!!!!

Ahem. Sorry.

Electrician can’t make it. Has rescheduled to next week.

And the worst thing? I’m on antibiotics I can’t even have a bloody drink!!!!

Progress

Back to work tomorrow, as I feel almost human again. Still a little tired but I can cope with that as I’m no longer (as of yesterday) falling asleep halfway through the afternoon. It’s good timing as the next few days are going to be hectic.

The kitchen fitters arrive tomorrow so last night we started taking out the appliances; the cooker is getting thrown out, the dishwasher is being passed on to some friends, and the fridge and washing machine will be sitting in the living room for the next few days. This gave me a chance to switch the fridge door round (only taken… 6 years?), and give it a good clean, two things I’ve been meaning to do for ages (working at McDonalds has an upside, I know the best way to clean seals on a fridge door..).

Aside from that, the past two weeks haven’t consisted of much. We’ve slowly been spending money, with Louise ordering and picking up the tiles for the wall and the new flooring, and had to fork out for a new hoover (our 12 year old Dyson has packed up) and to get the flashing on the porch redone to stop it leaking.

I’ve done little but watch crap TV, crap movies and sleep, with the exception of dipping in and out of “The Naked Jape” a rather fascinating book by Jimmy Carr and Lucy Greeves which explores why we joke, what makes a joke funny and a myriad of other issues surrounding our use of humour. It’s a smart read, and is peppered with some pretty good jokes as well. We are seeing Jimmy when he hits Glasgow in April so it was a timely read.

I also managed to finish of a website so it’s not been a completely unproductive time, but I’m quite looking forward to getting back to work for a couple of days.

Of course, I say that now…

Snow White

It’s March 3rd and we have about 3 inches of snow on the ground and it’s still falling. Ehhh, hello? Spring??

Louise tried to get to work twice this morning, and on her second attempt it took her an hour to get all of 8 miles so she turned round and came back home. I’m still not 100% so decided to stay at home the next couple of days, which is just as well as I wouldn’t have gotten to work this morning anyway!

I’m slowly recovering but still very lethargic with small bursts of energy leaving me completely drained. Writing this blog post, for example, will equal about a 20 minute doze on the couch later. Still it’s good to be able to do something, even if it’s very little and I’m hoping to be back to work later this week.

The timing of this is, of course, perfect. Perfectly awful that is… we are getting our new kitchen installed on Thursday this week and there is painting, plastering to be done, the removal of the cooker and dishwasher, the lifting of the floor… not to mention a myriad of other small jobs that we wanted done before the fitters arrived.

At this point I’ll thank my sister-in-law, my youngest nephew and my brother-in-law for coming over last weekend to help out. Claire and Mark removed all the tiles from the kitchen, and Paul helped remove some cabinets, all whilst I lay in bed trying to stay awake. What a great family. My parents will be helping once the kitchen is fitted as well, so at least Louise isn’t having to do everything.

I feel completely useless of course, and have made small attempts at helping, a little Polyfilla here, moving some things there, not much but at least I’m doing something!

That said, thanks for the well wishes. I am getting better, I slept all the way through last night without coughing once! (small victories and all that). I’ve another 4 weeks or so of antibiotics to get through but at least I am feeling a little better.

What about you? How are you? What have I missed??
