I’ve had a running list of apps that I’ve used on my various Macs over the years, I’ve mostly just copied and pasted the post and updated things as and when I change my ‘system’ (god I hate that term). Then I stumbled upon this App Defaults post and thought it would be a good format moving forward (you can see lots more of these posts here).

  • Mail Client: Apple Mail
  • Mail Server: Custom domain for email. I am in the process of killing off my gmail account too.
  • Notes: Apple Notes
  • To-Do: Apple Reminders
  • iPhone Photo Shooting: iOS Camera
  • Photo Management: Apple Photos
  • Graphics: Pixelmator Pro (unsure of future now though)
  • Calendar: Apple Calendar
  • Cloud file storage: iCloud Drive
  • RSS: NetNewsWire
  • Contacts: Apple Contacts
  • Browser: Safari
  • Chat: WhatsApp, and iMessage (I wish everyone was on the latter)
  • Bookmarks: Safari
  • Read It Later: Folio
  • Word Processing: Hmmmm Ulysses?
  • Spreadsheets: Apple Numbers
  • Presentations: Apple Keynote (but not created one for years)
  • Shopping Lists: Reminders (shared with my wife)
  • Budgeting & Personal Finance: Apple Numbers
  • News: Particle (iOS App), or News websites direct
  • Music: Apple Music (or a little web app for 6Music I cobbled together)
  • Podcasts: Apple Podcasts
  • Password Management: Apple Password
  • Journaling: Apple Journal (still migrating from Day One)
  • Writing: Ulysses for blog posts and the novel I’m still writing
  • Quick Notes: Tot a Mac/iOS sync’d scratchpad
  • Text editing: CotEditor
  • Clipboard: CopyClip
  • System upkeep: CleanMyMac
  • Utilities: Ice, boringNotch, AltTab, Pure Paste, Stand, Dato, Wallpaperer, AppCleaner.
