Double check

Obsessive compulsives are a funny lot, aren’t they. I don’t mean funny “ha ha”, I mean funny “intriguing”.

What makes them tick? (ha! no pun intend!)

I’m sure you all have your own little personal… things… I was going to say foibles, but that’s not quite right. From arranging items on your desk perpendicularly to the edge, to the order of items on your kitchen cupboards, we all have a way of doing things that may not be unique is certainly very personal. Even the most untidy people have something that must be done a certain way, or an item that must always be left in the same place, even if that just means that the keys MUST be hanging on the hook.

Which makes me wonder how far the leap from being a tidy and organised person to an obsessive compulsive?

I’m a tidy person. I like it when things are put away in their place, and everything is neat. I’m not overly obsessive about this but I can only go for so long, tolerating a mess, before I have to do something about it. That may mean I just chuck everything into a cupboard —the adage “out of sight out of mind” was made for me— but usually it means a clear out of old junk and a reorganisation of bookshelves.

Bookshelves! Dammit… meant to pick one up from my parents at the weekend. I digress.

So what if I’m tidy? I’m not obsessive about it, I don’t have a compulsion to tidy everything I see.

But then you start to dig a bit deeper and start pairing up common habits, rituals if you will, and begin to wonder. Over the past few months —and I’d guess that this is since Louise’s Mum died and I’m trying to be more “protective”… or something— I’ve not been able to get to sleep unless I’ve checked that the backdoor is locked. Doesn’t matter if Louise has says she has locked it, doesn’t matter if I’ve HEARD that she’s locked it, if I don’t physically check the handle, giving it a good rattle, myself then I’m unable to drop off. Obsessive? Compulsive?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to belittle OCD, or those who sufferer from it. Mental illness is a huge area and, because of the nature of the beast, has differing effects on everyone. That caveat aside though, it’s startling to think how close many of us are to becoming sufferers.

With that cheery thought in mind, what little rituals do YOU have? What silly little things stress you out for no good reason (and you KNOW there is no good reason but they still stress you out!) ?

Even if you don’t want to comment PLEASE take a moment to read Martin’s comment. Very open honest and illuminating. Thanks for sharing Martin.

Missing Mojo

For the past couple of months Louise and I have been working to a common deadline. I had a big product release at work, and she had the first part of a big order of wedding invite… erm… “stuff” to complete. Both of us have had “end of March” in our brains for so long that, now it has passed and April is upon us, we are both wondering what to do next. Sort of.

One man designs is keeping me busy, in fact I’m waiting on payment for a couple of things (one is currently “in the post”), have another two on the table at the moment, and another two looming (maybe three) in the next month or so. All good.

However, I’m currently feeling a little lacklustre and precisely the opposite from the revved up, working-silly-hours busy-bee that I was last week. I covered this a couple of weeks ago when I said, and I’m paraphrasing myself as I can’t be arsed to look it up (categories and tags be damned!), that “when I was very busy I found it much easier to focus on things”, and currently the opposite holds true.

A couple of soft deadlines, largely decided by me, are all I currently have. And both current projects are non-paying… (not directly, that is, but I’m speculating to accumulate) so I’m finding it hard to get some focus. Very unprofessional and not really like me, I’m usually pretty happy when I’ve got several plates in the air but right now, this very minute… well I feel like letting them drop just to see how they smash.

But I won’t.

After all, it’ll be me who has to clean up the mess.

Slimline

There are two things I’ve been meaning to fo with this website for a while.

1. Slim the number of categories.
I went a bit mad when I first installed WordPress, and I’m pretty sure I can trim the number down from the 22 I currently have (although not all are used, grand plans and all that) to a more manageable and sensible 6 or 7. More on that in a minute.

2. Categorise all of my archives.
I started this about a year ago and after slogging through some of the backlog – I’m tidying up, and adding titles as I go – I began to realise that I should have slimmed the number of categories FIRST. Yes, it’s obvious now but I was all caught up in just HAVING categories that I went a bit OTT.

Weird. Just got a massive dose of deja vu…

Anyhoo, onto the task at hand. Firstly I’m going to list all the categories I have available to me at the moment, and then I’m going to take a stab at a shortlist. If you have the time or inclination, I’d appreciate some feedback on the shortlist. Is it too short? Too long? Do you guys even USE the categories? Etc etc. I’m sure you know the drill by now (e.g. you leave comments stating your opinions, and I come along later and either correct you or ignore you!). First up, the current list of categories:

  • Articles – in a pretentious moment I deemed some posts should be ‘articles’. Usually the long waffling ones that no-one reads.
  • B.B. – the stuff I wrote before I had a blog.
  • Blogs – posts about blogs and blogging.
  • Books – reviews of books and posts about books
  • Diary – posts about stuff wot I have done in my daily life…
  • Firefox – posts about Firefox
  • General – the default category, used for stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else.
  • Gigs – reviews of gigs
  • Meme – posts about… ohh you get the idea…
  • Movies
  • Music
  • My site – stuff about this very site
  • News – commentary on current affairs.
  • Personal Musings – largely written B.B.
  • Software
  • Technology
  • TV
  • Web
  • WordPress
  • Writing – writing about writing… again with the pretentiousnessness!

Phew, far too many. What WAS I thinking? So, let’s trim that lot down, merge a couple and see what we end up with:

  • Articles – in a pretentious moment I deemed some posts should be ‘articles’. Usually the long waffling ones that no-one reads.
  • B.B. – the stuff I wrote before I had a blog.
  • Diary – posts about stuff wot I have done in my daily life…
  • General – the default category, used for stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else and the posts with multiple topics.
  • News – commentary on current affairs.
  • Personal
  • Media
  • Books – reviews and whatnot
  • Gigs (not strictly media I guess…)
  • Movies
  • Music
  • Technology
    • Software
    • Firefox
    • Hardware
  • Web
    • Blogging – posts about blogs and blogging.
    • Meme – posts about… ohh you get the idea…
    • My site – stuff about this very site
    • WordPress
  • Writing – writing about writing… again with the pretentiousnessness!
  • Right. Looks OK to me, over to you ladies and gentlepeeps. Set your inner librarian free!

Actually there is a further question relating to the usage of websites. Categories can be found all over the place these days… how useful are they? Do you use them regularly or only on certain types of sites? My own opinion sways on this. For my site I think the categories are useful as I tend to veer onto different topics as my mood takes me, so finding similar topics as the one you are currently reading can be tricky as there might not have been one for a couple of weeks. For sites that are a lot more focussed than mine they can sometimes seem like overkill, but then again, if you are surfing a knitting site and don’t want tips on needle choice, then a “patterns” category would be useful? No?

And then there are tags. Useful? Perhaps. The ones listed on this site should fire technorati searches allowing you to find other sites with similarly tagged posts (hmmm should maybe make that a bit more obvious), but maybe they’d be better used to navigate this site. Tag clouds are possible, but are they better, or worse, than categories?

Comments please (ohh and the bit below is just to remind myself that I am occasionally capable of reasoned discussion, it’s all a bit ‘overly analytical’ and may bore the pants off you.. if you are wearing any..

    Open day wander

A few historical sites had open days this weekend, so Louise and I headed off to visit Glasgow Cathedral. What a glorious building. I can’t really say much more than that (or I’d be here all day), suffice to say that there is something very powerful about buildings of that stature, maybe not religious (for me at least) but very evocative.

After that we wandered round the Necropolis as Louise missed the guided tour last year as she wasn’t well. Odd to think that the very next day we were rushing to the airport only to find out it was too late…

Anyway, needless to say I took some photos (I took a LOT of photos, these are the best of a bad bunch).

Then it was off to Babbity Bowster for some hearty food in a smoke free environment – bliss indeed – and then a little bit of shopping before our weary feet headed for home. It was a lovely day, much needed after the marathon of last week. Louise and I had were more like house guests, meeting at breakfast and occasionally late at night, so it was good to touch base and spend a day with my loving, funny, and fabulous wife. I do love her so.

    Laugh?

    I almost did.

April Fool is upon once more. I hate this day. But then I hate practical jokes.. umm.. when they’re played on me that is… it’s a bit like laughing at someone who has fallen over. I’d hate it if it were me, but if it’s someone else? HEE-LAY-RY-USS!

    Anyway.

The past week has gone something like this:

    • Monday – get up, go to work, have takeaway dinner, get home at 9pm
    • Tuesday – get up, go to work, have takeaway dinner, get home at 10pm
    • Wednesday – get up, go to work, have takeaway dinner, get home at 10pm
    • Thursday – get up, go to work, have takeaway dinner, get home at 12pm
    • Friday – get up, go to work, ship product at 9pm, go to pub, leave early because COMPLETELY KNACKERED

So, one 65 hour working week, and one pizza, indian, chinese and indonesian/thai dinners later and I’m looking forward to getting my life back to some sense of order. Plenty to do mind you but at MY pace. Naturally, despite the fact I’m completely shattered, I’m still wide awake at 2am.. ohh hang on.. that was a yawn. To bed!!

Have a good weekend. See you Monday.
