MySQL Help

OK, techie request time people. Those of a non-technical, anti-acronym mindset should look away now.

I think I’m getting hacked. Well not here, Scottish Blogs.

The Scottish Blogs site uses a MySQL database to store the member details. The submission form calls a separate PHP page which does a little checking (to make sure duplicate URLs and email addresses aren’t added) then throws the info into the database. The database connection details are held in a separate PHP file which is included as and where needed.

I’m pretty sure that someone has managed to figure out how to write to the database directly. I’ve taken the submission form offline for the past few hours but I’m still getting new “spam” sites added, I’m currently getting around 15 – 20 “spam” submissions a day, mainly from chinese sites/hackers (not really spam as such just illegible nonsense).

So, given those rather skimpy details, anyone got any suggestions on how this is happening and how I can stop them from doing it?

Linkeroo

So I’ve been trimming that big ole’ blogroll (on the left), trimming the chaff/dead and adding in a few that have been on my “Auditioning” pile for a while.

Which means I need to find some new sites to “audition”. But who? Over to you, dear reader, anyone I SHOULD be reading but don’t have linked? Anyone you think I’d enjoy, anyone you think would be a good addition to the list? Quality rules (with the exception of some of the layabouts whom I link to purely for historic reasons and not because they bribe me).

One site per commenter please, but not your own site!

Mobile web

CALLING ALL TECHIES!!

My phone includes a GPRS connection and a web browser (IE unfortunately). I have a few bookmarked sites that are optimised for PDA viewing, but was wondering if you (yes YOU dear reader) knew of any others?

Here are the ones I currently have:

Ideally I’m looking for a multi-inbox POP3 email webapp that I can access on my phone, and anything else that would be useful, I’m harrassing UGC (or CineWorld as they are now) to provide PDA compatible listings info for our cinema as well.

Ohh and I’m not looking for sites designed for WAP access, most of the sites listed above are typically meant for PDAs to view meaning the render OK in a web browser.

Anyone got any others?

Freecycle

Gosh I was busy last night, busy playing old PlayStation games that is as I picked up an original PlayStation last night all thanks to Freecycle and David in Yoker. Now I know you can play PS1 games on a PS2 system but where’s the retro fun in that?! Unfortunately I’m not sure if I have any old PS1 games left, I was sure I kept the best multi-player racing game ever – Micro Machines – and a couple of the better releases (Tekken, ISS Pro Evo etc etc) but I think a trip up into the loft is required to confirm.

I do like the idea behind Freecycle – “When you want to find a new home for something — whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door — you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group.” – and have to admit that there is something to be said for getting things for free. Of course you have to buy (pun intendeed) into the spirit of things and know that offering items is as good taking them, and yes I’ll admit that I’ve not yet offered anything (there is a futon in our loft that might be first in the queue though!). However I’m surprised at some of the things on offer, considering how little effort it is to “eBay” something*, as I expected it to be the harder to move items, furniture and the like. A quick scan down the recent emails and there are books, plants, lamps, magazine collections all listed alongside an old Ford Granada and a “huge cardboard box” (I kid you not).

Anyway, it’s sites like these that keep the internet both interesting – receiving the emails is a veritable pot luck – and community driven. Why not see if there is a local group near you.

* not strictly true unless you’ve used it before.

Podcasting

Ohh it’s the new blogging, is it?

Could be, everyone’s at it, and it’s guaranteed to be “mainstream” now that iTunes support it but, and please don’t think of me as some neolithic oaf but what IS all the fuss about?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking those who are doing podcasts, I’ve heard some very good ones recently and as an extension of a blog they give an extra dimension to the personality behind the microphone of a type you only normally get when you meet some in person (real life, remember that? fresh air, no keyboard and REAL people, what a concept! It’ll never catch on that one…).

However let’s get this straight. A podcast (blogcast, whatever) is, unless I’m hugely mistaken, mainly a recording of someone talking, with the occasional spot of music thrown in. Right? Err… and this is a new idea? Well obviously it’s not (and just in case you miss my point, I’m referring to that old favourite, of the more refined knob twiddlers out there, radio) but I’ll tell you what is.

Focus.

I can tune into hundreds, nay thousands, of radio stations right now and with a bit of searching I’m certain I can find a station that suits my interests. However the limitation of radio is that, because it’s being broadcast, it has to try and appeal to as many people as possible, even if the core subject is fairly specialised. Podcasting doesn’t have that limitation. Because YOU choose to download and listen to it, it can be as specialised and insular as it wants, the only person it has to please is you.

Anyway, if you’ve been on the ice planet Hoth for the past few months, then here are a few links to get you into podcasting. Ohh and ignore the “pod” part of the name, it’s not limited to iPods or MP3 players, you can create and listen to them on your PC.

As for me, well I’m gonna leave this one alone for the meantime preferring to remain elusively enigmatic and mysterious. Or maybe I just can’t be bothered (you can always listen to me on the radio if you’re desperate – 2.7MB MP3).

So, are podcasts the future of blogging? Possibly but I doubt it, at least not for a while. Too much like hard work at the moment, so until it becomes a lot easier to do I think it’ll remain on the outskirts for a while longer. However once it becomes a simple point and click exercise then I think they’ll soon be popping up all over the place. But then I’m sure they said the same about “audio blogging“, but they’ve been wrong before.

The real question is whether anyone can bring something NEW to podcasting. That’s where the challenge will lie, a true blending of the internet and radio is what is required and what has been sorely lacking so far. However cracks that one will leap ahead and we’ll have our first A-list podcaster.

Constantly Diverse

Prompted by this discussion about typography on the web and having been working through the archives here (still to finish) I’ve come to a ground breaking, earth shattering conclusion. No, seriously…
