What’s your favorite song about hope?
You can picture the footage, hand held black and white shots of a teeming throng of young women, screaming, jumping up and down, hands in their hair, completely out of control and under the thrall of the new fangled rock music that was starting to impact the lives of, well, all of us. It’s the ’60s, and The Beatles have arrived.
My Mum was one such young woman, through her college years, with her college friends, picking their favourites (hers was Paul), learning all the songs, joining the fan club.
I discovered an album in my parents record collection with a black and white sketched cover of some odd looking men. That album was Revolver (in Mono!) and my introduction to a band called The Beatles. You may have heard of them.
Similarly to Queen, I took myself to the local library and found more albums of theirs. My Mum had all their earlier stuff but fell away from them when Sgt.Pepper was released yet it was from this point on that I found songs that I would love and cherish for my entire life —in fact, Sgt.Pepper was the third CD I ever bought.
Abbey Road was the first one I borrowed, and as I flipped it over to play the second side on came a song that immediately made me feel happy, made me feel hopeful. I’m not sure the young teenage me really realised those were the emotions I was experiencing but it still makes me feel the same way. That sense of life in sunshine, and how everything is a little better when the sun arrives.
