Crucial Track – 21 July 2026

Share a song that sounds like your favorite childhood memory.

We had a large back garden. The shade of the house only extend as far as the edge of the grass, so it was there we placed our big scratchy wool travel blanket before lying down to do precisely nothing.

My Mum loved the sun. Loved to sit out in it, factor 15, a book, but mostly she’d just lie in the grass for a while.

I used to lie with her sometimes, little realising what she was going through —several miscarriages between me and my sister arriving.

Sometimes we’d chat about nothing, sometimes we’d lie in silence and I’d glance over and see she was asleep. I’d lower myself back quietly, happy just to be there watching the lazy summer sky scroll across my view, nothing but pristine blue and little fluffy clouds.

Years later this song would appear and instantly I was back there lying next to Mum.

I introduced my sister to The Orb years later, but never got the chance to explain this song to her, the times before her, when I was alone in the world.
