Crucial Track – 15 July 2026

What’s a song that makes you want to learn an instrument?

I can play the piano, and for a while was learning to play double bass. Whilst the guitar is the obvious choice for a rock loving kid to have picked up, I never really got the opportunity.

One instrument always catches my ear though, a small one, that has been involved in some iconic tracks in its time. I had one for a while but practising was tricky on my own (this was pre-internet days) and it was far too quickly discarded to the back of a drawer.

Every now and then I hear something featuring it, and while I did a Stevie Wonder re-listen a few years ago which brought it back into my mind, it’s this track that always grabs me. The tone and emotion make it stand out and it’s always the one I tried to play.

Plus, it’s a lovely song and the harmonica makes it soar.
