Mastodon bad, fediverse meh?

Apologies for the slightly, deliberately, click baity title there but honestly, the entire thing just seems a bit.. over wrought?
I’ll admit I’m a little behind the curve as I, rightly or wrongly, view the whole fediverse/mastodon thing as geeks being a little too geeky for their own good, it’s all a little too exclusionary if you don’t ‘grok’ the language (do we not say that anymore since X use it?), or don’t understand the nuance behind how it all hangs together.

Maybe I need to go read a 101 or something.

Anyway, I mention this purely because a couple of interesting posts I read recently had a ‘load comments’ option, which I clicked, and then was greeted with a mastodon link which I clicked and then was told that if I wasn’t on that server I couldn’t log in? So I couldn’t easily leave a reply so… that was that.

Not a great user experience, not very open web.

I didn’t bother going any further, my comments are rarely ever that much of an issue that they MUST be read. But then why put in such a barrier at all?

  1. Just use Nostr.

  2. You can login and reply from any server, you only need to copy the URL and paste it on your client’s search bar

That will open the post from your server and let you comment with an account you already have!

  3. Why? Never heard of it, convince me to give it a shot!
