Foppin' Hell

Yes, with some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket I decide I’d visit FOPP. I’d been avoiding it for sometime now, especially in the weeks before my birthday, but thought it safe to purchase some older items. Of course, as ever, FOPP’s effect on my spending patterns is dramatic and instead of just one or two CDs of older stuff I ended up with:

  • Bruce Springsteen – Born in the USA. Damn you “Music Hall of Fame” programme on Channel Four!
  • Zwan – Mary Star of the Sea. Been meaning to pick this up for a while, but didn’t want to pay full price. But I’ll pay a £5 for it, yes sir!
  • Leftfield – Rhythm and Stealth. Where my copy of this has gone is beyond me, and it’s not a CD that anyone I know would borrow from me. But a replacement for £5? Yes sir!
  • Weezer – Green Album. Been listening to “Hash Pipe” and thought, buy the album for a £5? Yes sir!
  • Sigmund Freud – Civilization and its Discontents. A book. A small thin book from the Penguin “Great Ideas” range. At £3 that’s gotta be a bargain.
  • Seneca – On the Shortness of Life. Another book. Another small thin book from the Penguin “Great Ideas” range. Again £3.

So you can see where I go wrong in FOPP. I fall prey to the simplest suggestive buying technique there is, namely, placing items on a shelf so I can see them.

In saying that, I’m a bit worried about FOPP. Once the purveyor of all things musical, they obviously make a bigger profit selling DVDs and the music shelves are getting smaller and smaller.

On a related note: Where do we learn, what I like to call, the “shelf shuffle”? It only happens in CD or book stores I think, anywhere there are racks of items you need to take in slowly. So there you are moving down an aisle in one direction, someone else is moving towards you and you both co-ordinate your movements as you meet. You both step in the correct direction to allow the other a seamless browsing experience. Clever ain’t it, but how did I learn it? Osmosis?

Triple Grande Skinny Latte

This post was brought to you by a highly caffeinated beverage.

I stand there, iPod headphones sprouting from my ears, waiting patiently in line. I ponder my role in society, and whether or not what I do, and what I buy, really could have an effect.

I’m in Starbucks, you see, that oft-maligned company (I was going to say ‘institution’ – damn them and their clever marketing) slowly spreading, virus like, across the globe (although I’ve yet to have a bad coffee from there). I know all about their business practises, and always feel that pang of guilt when I wander in. I am a hypocrite, but does that matter? I’m a sellout, but does it make a difference? And on what scale is that difference.

It seems it’s no longer OK these days to do anything without global considerations. I can’t buy Nike because they use sweatshops. I shouldn’t buy from Starbucks as they are putting local coffee shops out of business. I should look harder for that Fair Trade logo.

Honestly, it’s a wonder that I manage to go shopping at all. It’s almost enough to send me to McDonalds for breakfast.

Now I know that it is possible to completely avoid branded products, not buy from anyone or anything affiliated in anyway with a global corporation, but what I don’t get is how much impact I/we can have. What kind of groundswell would it take to reverse some of these trends of globalization? Half the country? It’s that old futile feeling, akin to the “cancer? it won’t happen to me” feeling that pervades society. I’m pretty sure that a lot (most?) people think or feel the same way, so why don’t we DO something? Pah. Apathy sucks.

Do you make a conscious decision to avoid brands, global corporations? Should I re-read No Logo (I can’t recall if it answered this question or not)? Why do I have these kind of thoughts whilst standing in line in Starbucks of all places? And does that say more about me than I care to admit?

On the other hand, it’s Friday. Where are the cakes?

Addendum: The previous sentence says it all I think. I ponder the issue for a while but I’m easily distracted, and LET myself become easily distracted by anything trivial. I don’t really want to answer those questions, to face the reality of the world we live it. It’s just too hard. Especially for a Friday morning.

Guinness Curry

“Curry is just a stew really… right?”

“And you can put Guinness in a stew…”

“GUINNESS CURRY!!”

Honest, we’re working REALLY hard today.

Toe-rific

Is there a doctor in the house? (Dammit, I’ve now got “Doctorin’ the house” in my head… 80s house music at it’s finest. Or lowest. I digress).

For the past couple of days I’ve had a mild tingling in my big toe. Not quite full on pins and needles, more a mild numbness. Difficult to describe. There is nothing obvious to the eye, it doesn’t hurt to touch but no amount of manipulation will make it go away. Doesn’t matter how I position my foot either, it’s still there. It’s not enough to keep me awake and I soon forget about it. In fact I’ve only just remembered that I first noticed it last week.

Hmmmm, any suggestions?

And any SERIOUS suggestions?

C500 Update

For anyone (OK, for Richard) who has an Orange C500 Smartphone, there is now an update available.

It’s a 22MB download, but adds the ability to send Video via MMS and upgrades the GPRS speed from Class 8 to Class 10 (faster browsing of the internet).

It WILL wipe your phone but a quick re-sync and re-install of your apps and you should be sorted – I’d backup first though, just in case.

For Sale

Anyone wanna buy a Sony MiniDisc Car Stereo?

Make me an offer, it’s doing nothing but sit in a cupboard, and either one of you guys gets it, or it goes on ebay.
