bookmark_borderStand by me

OK, I’m looking for a stand to put my webcam on. I have an LCD screen and my cam doesn’t come with clips for that kind of screen. Then I spotted the FlexStand. Ideal!

Not sure I want to pay £35 for something like that though… anyone else got any suggestions?

In other news: Congratulations to our mate Ian for winning the West of Scotland Karting Championship!

Admittedly choosing to skim over the ground at 40mph with little more than a sheet of plywood separating your tender bits from tarmac is bonkers, but well done nevertheless.

Well it’s payday. At last. Been a wee bit bad this month in some aspects (spent too much on… ohhh I dunno.. illuminated keyboards!) but overall it was a good month as we restructured things and are paying out less than we were before.

Mortgage wise we’ll be, paper-work pending, switching to a three year fixed rate again come end of August (5.74%). Whilst this doesn’t dramatically change the amount we pay out each month for our mortgage in comparison to what we pay now, only a difference of £25 or so, the difference over what we would be paying if we DIDN’T switch is substantial and somewhere around the £100 mark. Yikes!

And rounding off the financial theme, if you use internet banking, check the small print. Seemingly, for my bank at least (Bank of Scotland), you can earn a higher interest rate by depositing £1000 into your account. Depositing. Not leaving. So if you have the means, you can transfer £1000 from a savings account then 30 minutes later, transfer it back. Your current account will continue to earn interest at the higher amount despite the fact the funds have been removed! Seemingly this is seen as “playing the banks at their own game”. I’d prefer to call it “screwing the bastards for all they are worth as they’ve had plenty from me!”.

Anyhoo, enough seriousness (mature-ness?), it’s Friday! Which means two things.

Cakes at 11. Beer at 5!!

bookmark_borderI love Scotland

I do, it’s true. Not in an overly patriotic kind of way though, that’d just be… I dunno… a bit too American (I’m kidding! sort of…).

However it does have the tendency to piss me off, usually centred around the fast changing weather. Merely an hour ago it was glorious sunshine. By the time lunch had rolled around (rolled… get it..!) it is dank and dark.

Going to make tomorrow’s afternoon trip to the pub a bit depressing, I’d hoped to be sitting in the beer garden.

Bank of Scotland I salute you.

You changed the online banking system so I can no longer see what transactions are happening in my account.
You also changed the phone banking system and having spent the last 8 minutes navigating your ‘new improved’ system (improved for who?!) you now want me to wait to have my new security number activated before I can find out about the transactions in my account.

Twuntage of the highest order.

A related question – if a company sends you an invoice, and you have no prior arrangement with them to use the card details you had used once previously, are they allowed to go and grab the money from your account without your say? No I thought not.

Christ I’m gonna be in a bad mood tomorrow.

For the foreigners in our midst I suggest the Scottish Vernacular Dictionary may help decipher. And for those wanting to explore the uniqueness of the Glasgow parlance, may I recommend Wir Ain Leid – Glasgow Scots a fascinating, and very technical, article which should help with your pronunciation of some wonderful Glesga words.

The latter link also gives an insight into why (previously) call centres flourished in Scotland. All to do with proper and correct pronunciation darlings.

(Darlings? WTF? I’m turning into Peter!)

bookmark_borderSo…. emmm… hi…

Still stuck for some reason, maybe there is too much going on.

Work is getting hectic and veering from the normal everyday work to discussions of a bigger nature about processes and business analysis and … etc etc. But then it’s always been like that, well it has for me anyway, and to be honest I’m quite glad that it’s headed back to that state – shows that things are picking up. Ohh I forgot. “I don’t blog about work”. Moving on then…

I want to write about abortion, prompted by Green Fairy. I want to write about smoking bans in Scotland, prompted by Peter. I want to write more about the redesign (and continue it), prompted by Scrivs at White Space.

But I won’t. Can’t. What? Ohhh go on then. I’ll keep it brief.

Abortion – I believe in the woman’s right to choose.
Smoking – I believe a ban is a good thing. I like air.
Redesign – I WILL implement a style sheet switcher and allow both bigger fonts and a more minimal site design.

There. I did it. Composed a blog post from nothing. Ain’t I clever.

I’m off to bugger about with Scottish Blogs – if you hear a muffled scream that involves PHP code don’t worry, it’s just me.
