bookmark_borderRoll on the holidays

For various historical and religious reasons, none of which I pay much heed to, I will be on holiday from this Friday through to Tuesday the 3rd of May. Given that it’s only costing me three days from my holiday allowance, then it’s almost like a free holiday.

Part of that time will involve a trip to Skye, which I’m really looking forward to as I’ve never been that far north on the west coast of Scotland. My camera is primed, the USB stick of moosick is full (8GB of very random tuneage), and Kirsty and I are really looking forward to it.

After that it will be a lazy time for the most part, a well deserved break and a chance to properly recharge after a shitty start to the year and, if I’m really lucky, there may also be alcohol and debauchery in there somewhere as well!

In other news, my Mum is doing well, making good progress day by day. I’m really noticing big differences everytime I visit. Other than that, I’ve finally gotten my car back! I’ve not had it since the 7th February and it will need to go back in for a wee bit more work but that can wait a while.

Oh yeah and, very soon, my little sister will turn 30. I was flicking through some old photos last night, from when she was a bairn and still can’t quite believe she’s SO VERY OLD ALREADY! 😉

bookmark_borderGetting old?

I’m one of the older people in our office. This is a new thing for me but I’m quite enjoying it. Don’t get me wrong I’m not surrounded by graduates but it’s fair to say that I’m part of the minority both age and experience wise.

And I’m loving it for the most part.

However the downside rears it’s head frequently, typically during a conversation about TV or music, or any other item that is now referred to as ‘pop culture’. Frankly I’m getting a little fed up of the blank looks and general bemusement that ensues whenever I start talking about things that happened only 10 years ago!!

Like most people who are older than 24, I still feel 24 (feel free to substitute your own “I’m not XX years old, I’m still 20-something” number) but I’m being made increasingly aware of the difference in age. I’m not overly bothered, in fact whilst I write this I realise that the only part of me that cares is that small bit of vanity that I try and avoid.

As for all that tosh about young people helping to keep you young, well perhaps it is true for those really OLD people, you know the ones over 40, but certainly not for a spring chicken like myself.

Hmmm, I seem to be undoing myself here.

Perhaps the word “old” is misleading. I’m certainly more mature and considered (sometimes), and have more experience so perhaps that is the key difference. If nothing else I’ve certainly learned from past mistakes so that has to count for something, right?

Age is a funny thing, particularly when you find yourself in a situation similar to mine where you are seen as “older” in the eyes of many, yet still consider yourself “younger” than others. A middle ground of middle-agedness which, I’m finding, isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be.

Roll on 35!

bookmark_borderWhy re-design?

Written several weeks ago, thought I’d just post it and get it out of the way.

Yes, I’ve done it again, killed my “brand look” and gone for something different. However there is a good reason behind this… no, honestly, there is!

First up I should maybe take a moment to explain one of the reasons behind the OLD design. Remember those, slightly too large post headings? ALL CAPS and very prominent on the page. Well the reason behind them was two-fold.

  • They marked the beginning of a new post – nothing I hate more than scrolling down a page and not being entirely sure where one post ends and another begins.
  • The main reason was that they were supposed to make me think about my posts, to consider what I was writing a little more than usual as there was no hiding place for a “silly wee post”.

A lot of my posts start out as one idea, one line, one thought. Others, the ones which are reporting on real life are a lot easier to write, but the “one idea” posts have always been something I enjoyed doing but too often I’d give up on them. Having such large obvious post headers was my way of trying to lend the posts some gravitas and, hopefully, influence my writing/thinking about posts.

And some people say design isn’t important! Sheesh.

On to the new design then, and one key change is the size of the miniblog. I swithered over this for a while but thought I’d at least give it a bash – the other option is to ditch it and have “link dump” posts every now and again in the main column – and see how it works.

The idea is that the main column, where you are reading at the moment, will hold the posts that I’ve given some consideration. The miniblog (on the left) will be slightly expanded as I often felt a little cramped when writing posts for it previously.

I don’t have a set rule but I wouldn’t expect the miniblog posts to be much longer than they are at the moment, and I don’t expect I’ll be posting the main column, “longer” pieces, as often. The key reason behind the latter decision were the posts I published whilst we were away on holiday in July. They were all written in advance, edited and re-worked and published with a gap of a day or two between them. Not sure about you but I certainly felt that they were some of my better posts, they certainly gathered some excellent comments.

To summarise – longer posts in the main column, shorter posts/links in the miniblog. Simple.

The rest of the design followed on from that decision. I didn’t want to lose the miniblog too far down the page, so shifted the navigation up to the top of the page, losing a few of the options on the way.

There are still a few things I’d like to do but the LOOK won’t change for a while.

bookmark_borderOLD PC

It’s been lying forlornly next to my desk for over a year now, it’s 15″ monitor gathering dust. I keep meaning to re-format it, and do something with it, but what?

It has no USB ports, a PII chip, 128MB of RAM and a whopping 8GB hard disk.

Any suggestions?
