Man Called Marco by Adam Ant

What was the first album you ever bought? Pick your favorite song off that album.

John Menzies was in the high street of my hometown. An L-shaped store on the corner of the street and the pedestrian part of the Artizan Centre. Make your way to the back of the store, turn a corner and head upstairs. Four racks of LPs, and a wall of singles, greet you. The latest albums, the top 10, are displayed near the counter at the back.

From it I zero’d in and plucked Friend or Foe by Adam Ant from the display, and plonked my money on the counter. It’s a vague memory but given I was 9 years old I can’t imagine that I was either particularly conversant, nor alone (although I’d warrant which parent was with me would’ve waited downstairs).

*Goody Two Shoes *was the big hit. Having ditched "The Ants" this album became his biggest, I can still recall the tracks, including my intro to The Doors on the cover of Hello, I Love You.

And yet it was this last track, Man Called Marco, a track lost over the turn, with no lyrics, that caught my ear the most. A step away from the pop sensibilities this had an almost movie-like quality. It sits apart from the rest of the album. I still have it on my own, very long, random playlist.

  1. Funnily enough, my first album was Prince Charming by Adam & The Ants on cassette. My Mum & Dad got it for me for my birthday.
