Share a song that changed your perspective on music.
First question I have to ask myself is, what is my perspective on music, and has it ever changed?
I grew up with music, music playing in the kitchen, the radio or cassettes in the car, the LPs in the living room, the piano, my Dad’s guitar and harmonica. I remember my first CD, I remember my introduction to MiniDisc, and my fascination with Napster and then Spotify (the choice!) although I’m now happily in the Apple Music world.
But I don’t think, across all those technological changes, my perspective on music has changed.
Music is vital. Music is passion. Music is love. Music is pain. Music is life.
Perhaps, then, I need to look at this differently, and try and pick a point in my music life that has altered my thinking a little.
It’s 1993, I’m watching Top of the Pops and they introduce a song, a ‘new sound’, and I am utterly captivated. This is music but not as I know it. It’s not classical, it’s not pop or rock, it’s something other. Chopped up sounds over a thumping beat.
Years later, after ploughing my way through Chicago house music, and following the growth of electro sounds through the charts I guess my love of dance music in general can be tracked back to this moment, A 10 year old boy watching Top of the Pops in his living room.
Perspective changed? No. Skewed? Most definitely.
