Pixel Area

I got an intriguing email last night, some of you may have received one too.

It was from Oleh Providnyk who said he’d added my site to his new blog map Pixel Area.

OK, but what is Pixel Area?

Pixel Area is a 100×100 coordinate grid with room for 10,000 websites. Each pixel belongs to a real person and links to whatever they have online: a blog, a project, or just a small site they made. You pick an empty spot, choose a color, add a short description, and visitors find you by wandering around the map, one coordinate at a time, without really knowing where they will end up.

It’s a little quirky, but I like the fact there isn’t any voting or algorithm, it’s just a place you can go to click around and explore. As Oleh confirms, yes it does look like the Million Dollar Homepage but nothing is for sale here.

I am heartened that people are still making such things. Whimsical but useful and offered without fanfare or price.

My site is here, and if yours isn’t listed yet, go claim a square today. Maybe we could be virtual neighbours!

  1. Found my site in there too yesterday via my referrer logs!

  2. While I know this is different in many different ways, it does remind me of that kid in the way back times who sold pixels for a dollar and made bank with brands looking to buy as much pixel space as their marketing budget would allow.

But I do like the idea of each pixel here being genuinely a real person creating.
