One thing I’ve learned in finishing my 100 days challenge was the power of small changes. On the whole I didn’t do all that much different. Sure I pushed myself to exercise more but most times that was just a walk in the evening —brisker than a stroll— with my favourite music playing.
I’ve always enjoyed walking around listening to music, letting my thoughts roam. It’s almost meditative, something I didn’t even realise when it started to become an occasional habit back in my late teens.
I’ve been making small changes elsewhere too, tweaking some things I do at work for small efficiency gains, the type of thing that over the past few weeks has made the production of one of my weekly reports much easier and faster.
I’ve been making changes here on this blog too. I’ve been loving hitting the Crucial Tracks site first thing in the morning and realised I was in danger of losing that data should the site ever disappear. I write a few paragraphs to go with each song choice and so I built a small plugin for my WordPress instance that grabs the JSON feed and pops it on this site. Recently I changed that to use the song and artist name, rather than the generic ‘Crucial Tracks’.
I’ve been making changes at home too. Becca now works weekdays (9 to 3) so I’m doing the majority of the school drop-offs with Jack and trying to do a little more around the house too. Me being me, I’ve got some recurring reminders set up, as well as blocked time in my calendar to make sure I don’t get caught up in my workday. The benefits of working from home for sure.
And I’ve been happy with the results so far. Small changes, keeping an eye on things, not reaching for big goals, huge tasks, means I now have a better sense that our garage might one day be cleared out and set up the way I’d like whilst accepting that’s gonna take a while.
One step at a time.
