What’s a song you’d want to hear on your birthday?
I can almost feel my wife rolling her eyes.
I am not a fan of my birthday. Not for any age related denial reason, just because I feel long past the need to have any hoopla to celebrate the day —there is likely more deep seated reasons for that, likely something about never having felt validated and seen enough— but the fact remains. I’m not a big fan.
All of which actually makes it harder for me to choose a song because all I’ve done is rule out any song directly related to birthdays (sorry to Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Altered Images…).
But I’m not going to stray that far from the topic, and give you a birthday song that trips around the edges of my memory. Not the original version but the cover that was released in the early 80s.
It’s one of those songs that I was immediately drawn to but back then couldn’t have told you why (similar, Running Up that Hill has been part of my music lexicon long before I ‘discovered’ Kate Bush). Likely that the melancholy that remains part of me, was seemingly writ large in the lyrics of this song.
