Not sure that title even makes sense to be honest, but on we go!
I listen to BBC 6Music most mornings when I’m working. The joys of working at home, my music choice, my coffee, my desk and a window I can open as wide as I wish.
However that means keeping a browser tab open all the time, something I’m clearly not great at as I kept closing it/the browser and so I looked for a solution. I found one, adapted it for 6Music, and have been using it since then (2021).
Over the past few weeks I’ve been trying to expand my listening and discovered FIP a French run, online radio, that has a wonderful esoteric mix that sits well, I think, alongside that of 6Music —the latter is much more commercial but I like the chat in the morning, tending to switch to FIP in the afternoon.
Similarly to my irk with browser based running of FIP, I realised I could do some ‘vibe coding’ and maybe build a little menubar that allowed me to switch between each stream.
So I fired up Codex, and told it:
I listen to a streamed radio, but I’d like to build a little Mac app to sit in my menubar that plays the stream without me having to go to the website and leave safari running all the time I have built something similar already for BBC 6Music
It asked me for the Xcode folder for the 6Music app, then the streaming source of both stations —FIP provides it, but the 6Music one wasn’t quite right but Codex found a better way (not scraping) and suggested that.
A few minutes later I had this little menubar app running.
It works flawlessly so far.
What are your thoughts?
