Who knows that you blog?

I love when this kind of thing happens, blogs that I follow (thank you RSS) indulge in a little post-and-reply on a meta kinda blogging question.

So David asked the question, and Alex replied , as did Kevin.

And it’s a good question, my answer to which has varied over time. In the early days blogging felt like a secret cabal, a little club of us who conversed through our blogs virtually every day.

When I started my own blog I mentioned it to my (now ex) wife and she feigned interest in that generous way a loved one does, much the same as my current (and forever!) wife.

My parents started reading my blog a few years later and I know they both enjoyed the little insights and my writing. And I’ve shared a few links on Facebook to certain posts in the past too.
As for telling other people?

If asked very comfortable telling people I have a blog but it wasn’t always like that.
There was a definite secret guilt about blogging, largely because it wasn’t really fully understood unless you were a blogger too. Like, “why do people spend all that money on cycling, I don’t get it”, says the person who then went on to try a better bike and fall involve with the child-like joy of cycling —that person is me, BTW.

Given that my domain name is my name it’s safe to say I’m happy if people find my blog. Beyond that I don’t really do much to promote it outwith other blogs.
That’s been my approach for at least 20 years and I’ve no good reason to change.

But hey, how about you?
