I was a technical writer geek for many years, so I know full well about em (and en) dashes, and why they are called that, but what I hadn’t ever pondered was how they are used, especially in fiction.
As ever 99% Invisible opened my — I was going to say eyes but it’s a podcast so that wouldn’t be right — ears to not only the history of this particular piece of punctuation, but has emboldened me to further embrace it.
