The rain raineth on the just

Original post title was “Calling Noah” but given the floods down south, perhaps not a wise choice…

It’s raining. Again.

I realise that blogging about the weather is the lowest of the low but as I’ve never really been one to follow trends or to bend to peer pressue then I’m afraid you are going to have to put up with it. Or you could go somewhere else I guess, but… hang on, I’m losing my train of thought.

Actually a note on peer pressure whilst it’s in my head. My closest friends know me well, and know that there is little point trying to persuade me into doing something I don’t want to do. The most common example is that age old favourite that happens to most guys when they are out for a beer. Yes, I’m talking about the “Go on, have another…” discussions which I so loathe. So when I asked for a diet coke instead of a beer, and my mate replied “Sure”, a little part of my soul smiled. I hate peer pressure with a passion and it’s possible that I’m over sensitive to this kind of thing but … well… anyway. There it is.

Rain.

Like most people who are prone to a spot of melancholy, I quite like the rain from time to time. Sitting watching droplets race down glass being a universal pleasure.

But considering that it’s been fairly sunny for the middle part of this week, and only as we approach the weekend does it start to get grey and dreich*, well I think we are all entitled to moan about the weather.

Whilst the garden is certainly enjoying the past few weeks, one day blazing sunshine the next a complete downpour, it does mean that once again our lawns have risen above the height of the upstairs windowsills and strange noises can be heard from the undergrowth. I’m pretty sure a tribe of Amazonian warriors is plotting to steal my MacBook, either that or the neighbours cat is slowly being strangled by a rogue path of buttercups.

Sunny nights of a weekday eve are useless. By the time we get in and have dinner it’s 7.30 or later, and any thoughts of going out to tackle anything in the garden have vanished, and that’s presuming we don’t actually have other plans. The really annoying thing, and I may have mentioned this before, is that we moved to a house so we could enjoy sitting out in the back garden with a nice chilled glass of wine… we’ve been there for 6 years and I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve actually managed it.

It’s raining still. Damp, miserable, and the forecast is for more of the same.

Now, where’s that Radiohead CD?

  1. tell me about it. we had a 48 hour heatwave – way too hot – over the weekend, monday was lovely – 25°C and sunny and then the rest of the week went to shit. it rained ALL DAY yesterday – and it wasn’t that proper, heavy rain, it was that stupid, light rain which still manages to keep you indoors.

so far, it’s dry today …. and the sun is forecast for tomorrow 🙂

  2. Sun’s shining here and I’ve had to start watering the garden again in the last week. Maybe your next move should be to sunny Norfolk?

I completely agree with you about the peer pressure thing, something I always resisted and is certainly why I never took up smoking.

  3. Your weather-based chat is indeed as dull as the skies about you. So perhaps you can redeem yourself tomorrow by posting some cute photos of the neighbour’s cat.

  4. Can’t see where the problem is, it’s sunny and dry down here in the Royal county. For a change. Serves you right for being so smug recently.

But don’t worry, it’ll be fine in October. Especially at the end of October.

  5. You’ve had a better summer than normal up there according to the weathermen (something to do with the Gulf Stream being further north than normal, hence the low pressure down south), so think yourself lucky 🙂

  6. Yeah OK OK, it’s been nice up here, and to be fair the sun is now out and shining.

    Counting chickens afore hatched. Again.

  7. A few weeks back I ran into my downstairs neighbour who I’ve not seen since last summer when we could be found most evenings drinking beer and chatting. There’s not been one single day when I’ve sayt out this year. I’m almost at the stage of wanting to get back to opaque tights and knee-high boots – at least I know what to put on in the winter…
