Something I said?

This blog has always been a little up and down, stats are never constant with spikes and .. um… the opposite of spikes… ohh yes, troughs, littering my reports.

However I guess I need to rethink things a little as comments have been very light the past few weeks. I know I know you are all very busy and have better blogs to read but, more as a little experiment than any form of ego-stroking… honest… I’m issuing a call to everyone who reads this post.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT.

Even if it’s just “Hi”, or “Bog off you self-absorbed wanker”, or “Twins? Twins that love pink? Ohh my worlds, Big Brother has gone mental this time”. I’ll leave the comment up to you.

But please, PLEASE, LEAVE A COMMENT.

(I’d threaten to quit if I didn’t get more than 20 different people commenting but… well I don’t want to quit, and I’m not THAT melodramatic)

UPDATE: Gosh, what a response. I am truly humbled, including those of you who decided to email instead of commenting (you know who you are, and those emails were appreciated as well). As most have rightly pointed out, a lot of people will be on holidays and these days it can be a case of too many blogs, not enough time.

If I’d actually planned this I might have been able to have a stab at how many people are reading via RSS but, roughly speaking, my daily hit count almost doubled yesterday… not sure how that translates but it’s interesting.

Comments

  1. It’s not you, it’s me. I haven’t had anything very interesting to say of late, so I haven’t commented. Plus been busy going to Denmark; finishing my current contract; and preparing to move to Italy…

  2. <think>Tosspot 😛 </think>

Seriously, some of it may be down to change in domains etc., but I suspect most of it is just summer lull, while people less geeky go out and, like, do stuff, instead of sitting in front of t’PC.

That’s my rationale for it, anyway. 🙂

  3. It’s not you it’s me, I’ve spent weeks trying to catch up with Bloglines, currently standing at 528. Be very very grateful you haven’t been unsubscribed, because some blogs have!

  4. That’s because you’re a star, dear.

(I commented here yesterday. A small article, actually. I was wondering if you had a reaction to my reaction. But I’ll never know.)

The last person to order people to leave comments was zed’s son Todd.

  5. Hi,
7 comments including this one, not far to 20.
Keep it up, a bit of Scot blogging is always good. 🙂

    Lance

  6. With the demise of Tony Blair in a few short weeks, and Sedgefield about to become a forgotten backwater again, something momentous is about to happen.

A Scot will become Prime Minister.

As most Scots support somebody else rather than England when no Scottish team is playing, I have decided to move to France, and support Nicolas Sarkozy.

You did say any comment didn’t you ?

  7. Greetings from the hills of Surrey 🙂 I don’t say much to the people I work with, let alone comment on other blogs, so please don’t feel bad!

But yeah – twins, Victoria Beckham, and Peaches Geldof…!? Hope the sun comes out soon 😉

  8. I think people are busy. I’ve had fewer comments of late. Not that I have the readership numbers that you do, Gordon *bobs head respectfully*. I hadn’t felt insecure about it though. Not until you mentioned it, at any rate.

JonnyB has a point (and also a lot of comments on his blog, of course). Do you leave comments as much as you used to?

  9. Hmmm. It’s not just you, I’ve noticed the same thing myself. Of course, I’m sure you get much more traffic than I do, but either way, there’s definitely been a lull or drop-off in the commenting of late.

  10. *sigh*.

    Yes, Hello Gordon.

I was jsut thinking about how I hadn’t used that Arena flowers voucher and how comprehensive your review of their website.

Mine was just going to say “Arena flowers offered me loads of free stuff if I mentioned them on my website. So I did.”

Yours is a lot more pleasant and professional. And I never got round to it.

I don’t leave comments anywhere anymore. I’m shit at it. Busy things – sorry. Do read everything on GoogleReader though. But I suppose that doesn’t count. Boo.

  11. I don’t know if I’ve even commented here before. I rarely seem to comment these days anywhere, though I often mean to. Personally, I need to blog more and build more of an audience if I want comments.

  12. There’s defo a lull but also I’ve not been in a commenting mood. It might be to do with you selling your soul – just can’t put my finger on it 🙂

I blame twitter & summer (almost) for the lull – it’s not just you seeing it.

  13. hello!
i don’t generally leave comments as i don’t often have anything to say….

  14. Ach, I’m always here. I read you off Bloglines, lurking in the background, but don’t often pop up to say hello.

    Hello!!!

  15. Hello!

I’m generally a lurker on blogs unless I have something ace to say, as I’m wary of being branded a comment spammer! Bad karma. Or something.
    🙂

  16. They took away my intertubes.

I’m plumbed in again now though. But I had to download all those episodes of Lost.

    Then I found Heroes.

Now I’ve run out of good stolen telly I’m ready to give you my full attention again.

    What were you saying?

  17. I’m a Chinese girl,and I read your Blog by chance!
    So, …… hello! ^_^

  18. Blimey, this is going well.

For the record, my stats ain’t all that high ya know… average 250 a day…

  19. Not that I comment much on here anyway (think I’ve only done it a couple of times) but extremely busy at the mo. Still like to read your musings though, even if I haven’t much to add.

  20. I peruse several blogs regularly including yours but never post…..no idea why not.

More people go out to play after work in summer.

  21. Ja, ja, ja, ich kommentier ja schon. Huhu, hallo. Jetzt neu: Auch Kommentare in anderen Sprachen! Jetzt zufrieden? Und ausserdem will ich Katzenbilder!

I’ll let you figure out what that means. That should keep you busy for, say, 37 seconds. And stop you from begging for more comments for those 37 seconds.

    Ha.

  22. Time? What’s that?

I’ve neither posted much nor commented much anywhere lately. Time poverty, you see.

I will try to do better. Unfortunately, my darling wife objects to me using the computer between the hours of midnight and 6am, insisting that I sleep or something.

  23. There now you see! Loads of folk would pluck an eye out to get 35 comments 🙂 (Except mebbe Andre and zed. And Jonny, but he’s going down a bit these days too. And don’t get me STARTED on mike…)

  24. I get about 60 a day and only once did the hit count get to three digits.

Even so, I’m sorry you weren’t feeling the love. I’ll comment more often.

  25. By that, I meant just feed a few lines, not only random ones.

I thought I’d put that in 2 comments to make you feel even more loved 😉

  26. Comment as requested- Bog off you self absorbed wanker. Always happy to comply with your requests unless they include dirty washing xxx

  27. Language Gordon’s Parents!!!

Gordon – I didn’t understand a word of that 🙂 I don’t read anything fed en-masse to me – I am old fashioned and like clicking on pages. Plus, the real interest in blogging, for me, is the comments, and I’d miss that, if I read most sites via an aggregator.

BTW, only the unit digit of the number of comments shows up in IE. CBAT open Opera or Firefox to check if it’s only in IE.

  28. Hello! I’m on holiday myself, but can’t keep away from the internet. And it’s reminded me that I still haven’t updated your link in my blogroll to point to the right domain.

  29. Blue witch- we only used the language our son asked for-if you scroll back you’ll see – we tend to take what he says literally! Other than that we are great parents, just ask him about the black Ferrari we bought him.. that’ll get us into 50 comments and the boy will be pleased.

  30. They did, and I’ve heard MUCH worse from my mother… MUCH.

Sometimes she even tells dirty jokes…

Ohh and Forest, better get a move on, the old domain will be changing this weekend!

  31. Hello. I’ve been away this week, so no blogs for me. Last week I felt a bit sad and neglected on the comment front too. It makes me paranoid I’m being boring, you see.

  32. 52 comments!! You don’t know you’re born! I got 15 on one post I did this week, (and 5 of them were from me) and I thought it was Christmas!

And my blog’s ace….really, it is.

    No, it IS.

    really….

  33. These days, what with interest from BBC2, Channel 4, Radio 4, Universal Pictures and Mrs McGregor’s Pasty Shop – all of whom are interested in centering ‘big projects’ around my blog – I really am far too busy to leave comments anywhere but on my own site in response to the adulation of my fan. Sorry … I meant fans.

But, you know, it’s marvellous to know you’re still here Gerald. Sorry … I meant Gordon. Do keep up the spiffing work, particularly the photos of dogs in hats. Oh, wait a minute, that’s Dooce. Sorry.

In explanation, you would still have my sarcastic comments masquerading as wit if only I hadn’t discovered RSS and Getting Things Done applications. Now that I’m Getting Things Done I don’t have time to do other things, because I’m too busy Getting Other Things Done. Though I still don’t know what those Things are and why they only take up 37 minutes of my day, leaving me with twenty-three hours and twenty-minutes to stare at my navel. Which is lovely, by the way. Since you asked.

    Will this do?

  34. Ah I’m a bit late to this. You post so often that you tend to build up in my reader when I get busy. Like recently.

I still read but when busy don’t comment as much.

    Sorry.

    I still love you though.

  35. yes! hello! there always seems to be 10088 new things to read in Bloglines so it’s hard to get round everyone with comments. you are still loved 🙂

  36. It’s not me, it’s you. Oh, wait, that’s not right…

Oddly enough, you’re not the first person I’ve read today complaining about a lack of comments. Perhaps some evil force is stealing the ‘lectrons as soon as comments get posted? Like, uhnn, everywhere?

  37. Yeah, I read you too. Not sure why though. Always with the jogging… you’re making me feel inadequate!

    ps. only kidding, obviously.

  38. Hi – just discovered your blog via a link from D4D so thought I’d pop in and say ‘Hello’. Better late than never.

Curiously, I have often wondered the same thing – how many (if any) people are reading my blog. Who are they ? How did they get here (Google, mainly) ?

However, even when I have politely pleaded for feedback, I am met with a deafening silence 🙂

    Yours, Johnny Come Lately.
