It’s getting very techie around here isn’t it, last one for a … well… a couple of days at least.

If you are anything like me when you sit down and turn on your computer you really want it to start as fast as possible. You don’t want to have to wait until Windows loads and then wait again until all those other little programs load, no you just want to get right to work.

Of course you can’t because, probably unbeknownst (ohh I love that word, must use it more often) to you, there are several little programs all trying to run at startup. A lot of these will be small programs that you’ll never notice as they don’t do anything except check for updates, but they still take time to start and take system resources whilst they are running.

One way to see what is running is to call up the Task Manager – for XP users, right-click the taskbar and select “Task Manager” from the menu, for other Windows users I think CTRL+ALT+DEL will bring up the required dialog but be careful you only do that once or you’ll reset your machine… maybe… I can’t remember to be honest. In the Task Manager window there is a “Processes” tab and this lists all the programs running on your machine. There will be quite a few in there, as Windows uses around 30 little programs for a variety of different things. Now you CAN close programs from there – highlight the program in the list and click the button, bottom-right, that says “End Process” – but you need to be careful. Again XP won’t let you close anything that Windows NEEDs to have running. As with most things of course YMMV.

Alas Task Manager is only handy when everything has already started, but what if you find yourself continually closing programs just after you start Windows? Where do they come from? How do you stop them!

Enter a little applet which, when installed, you can access from your Control Panel. Mike Lin’s Startup Control Panel is it’s name and I’ve been using it for years. It will list EVERY program that tries to run at startup, with each startup area (user specified (your startup folder in the Start menu), common programs, and any sneaky hidden ones in your registry), and it allows you to stop them from running or delete them from the startup list so you never need to worry about them again!

It’s a simple solution that, over time will save you hours of closing programs, and it can help if you’ve got any nasty programs trying to keep themselves hidden. It’s well worth a look and, best of all, it’s free (donations welcomed though).

Anyway, that’s not why I’m here, in fact I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be in the garden.

Windows XP users! Are you fedup with applications stealing focus when they are launched? I am, especially as I had installed TweakUI for XP which has the option to “Prevent applications from stealing focus”.

And then I remember reading somewhere that, in a previous version of TweakUI, that option actually worked in reverse. In other words if you WANTED to stop applications stealing focus (popping up in front of what you are currently working on) then you had to UNCHECK that option.

And it works.

This post is brought to you by the letter A, the number 3249, and the random workings of my head.

P.S. You smug Mac users can just shut up.

I’m slowly remembering how to do this thing called ‘blog’.

Next up, a question: Anyone know of a small (light on resources) PHP web server I can run on my home machine (XP Pro), for testing purposes only.. it’s a real pain to have to make changes to a PHP script, upload it, refresh the page, change the PHP, upload, refresh… etc etc..

You see I’m determined to launch the Scottish Blogs website. It’s almost there. Almost. But not quite. I just need to figure out a couple more things and it’ll be ready. Sort of… ach, it’s as near as dammit, and I can add more code to it later.

So you wanna see my desktop then?

If you can make it out on this resized screenshot – you’ll spot that I’ve got a different XP Style running. Rob mentioned StyleXP in a comment, which will let you do this and a lot more, but I didn’t like the 2MB (!!) overhead, and found a nice little patch that let’s you load other XP Styles without an application.

Next up, the text on the left hand side has the time and date, current CPU usage, RAM usage, number of processes running, internet traffic (up and down, handy if I was, say, running eMule or something..), IP address, Uptime, Last restart time and date and the wee bars at the bottom of the chunk show my hard drive partitions and their status – provided by a Samurize configuration.

Top-right, that black square is the cover of the currently playing track in iTunes (Jay-Z’s Black Album at the moment) – provided by a Samurize script.

Along the bottom is the aforementioned Y’z Dock – it’s a way of replicating the Mac bar thingy, and was so Mac like Apple told the guy who developed it to ‘cease and desist’ – as I mentioned, you can still download it in a few places, didn’t take me long to find it, but it is no longer being developed.

That’s it really. There are several custom icons used to mark specific folders – e.g. for all my photos – but not much else going on. I’m a bit of geek (yes, really) and find it all fascinating. I’ve been running all this stuff for months and not had a single crash although, as with most PC software YMMV. Next up, that box of mine and Knoppix I reckon.

I’ve been getting back skinning and customisation of my desktop recently thanks to Samurize, Neowin and (the sadly defunct but still findable with Google) Y’z Dock. It’s slightly addictive mind you – and I find myself changing things a lot more than I used to… especially when you come across a screenshot of someone else’s desktop and think “ohhhh I like that!”.

So, how many of you guys are bothered about ‘skinning’ applications or customisation of your OS?

UPDATE: Well the initial response to this is “eh?” so here is a primer for you. One note here, if you do decide to ‘skin’ Windows XP by getting some new themes (the default blue with green start button is called Luna BTW) then let me know. I’ll post a screenshot of my current desktop when I get home to show you some of what is possible. Of course if you aren’t interested just say so I don’t waste my time!

For some reason, without fail, I wake at around 7am at the weekend.

BING!

Wide awake.

Can someone explain why?

I should point out that I don’t actually get up at that time, I usual doze off again after about 10 minutes but it’s getting a little tiresome. Particularly when I struggle to get up at 7am for work (But I think I know why that happens…).

Anyway, spent most of last night re-installing software and generally tidying out old files and stuff. Still got bits and bobs to do mind you but all in good time. XP seems to be behaving a lot better now, and I think I solved the screen saver/power mode issue – thanks to everyone who commented and emailed offering suggestions and help, it was much appreciated!

And finally, I decide to move the miniblog a little further up the page to ensure those of you with lower resolutions can see it better. Thanks to Hg for the suggestion, if there is anything you would like changed here let me know, I may write and post for me, but I kinda hope my dear readers enjoy the experience too.

Right, off to burn some CDs, grab a shower then head off to sunny Dumbarton, which for a change is actually sunny today (unless my Mum was lying to me to get us to go through to visit… Mum?).
