So, what is the power of the Zeldman? Well it prompted Katerina to write and send a very lovely email. More power to this weird and wonderful community. Dot-coms failing? So what? This is the real power of the internet, connectivity, shortening of distances, lessening of prejudices, long may it continue (and as Blogger have just got two new servers in, it seems like it will!). I’m also considering changing my name by deed poll – Zeldman, Kottke, LanceLog… McLean.org? Gordon.com? Not very catchy.

Zeldman'd

The man, the iconoclast (OK maybe I should look up the real meaning in a dictionary but you get my point) tips his hat my way. It is an strange experience, seeing a mail in your inbox from ‘Jeffrey Zeldman’. Almost like someone playing a bad joke on you. I’m sure he’s a down to earth guy (although his pic scares the hebejebies out of me… yeah I should check that in the dictionary as well), so thanks for the hat-tip Zeldman. Off to take a screenshot of this auspicious moment. 8:50 a.m.: Iconoclast – correct word. Hebejebies – not in my dictionary, note to self: what is the point in a dictionary that doesn’t have hebejebies in it?!

Historically

It’s official. I’m getting old. I was thinking back to Hogamanay, it was about 4:30 a.m. when the guitars came out, and I realised that I knew more words to the songs than I really should…Dumbarton’s Drums, Wild Rover (but alas not the Battle of GlenFruin…). Next up my Dad (active in the local Burns club – it’s a chore he loves) had a book about the history of Dumbarton, and damn interesting it is too. OK, so maybe I’m not getting old, just getting patriotic, or nostalgic or SomeTHiNG, whatever it is I’m gonna see how long it lasts. My guess is not very, as a child of the 20th century my attention span is shorter than a gnats… …

Speechtherapy

speechtherapy — its all in the name i suppose – slight problem though, I don’t know the name… thanks for the link though, I’ll be reciprocating soon (see next sentence!). Slight re-design in progress prompted by visiting several sites today and realising the errors of my ways. But never fear, the.. em… re-design is near? Man, I should stop drinking so much coffee.

Newsworthyless

Nephew is doing well, sense of humour has survived, mind you it looks like he has gone 13 rounds with Tyson. Tidy house, no film watching but a productive weekend nevertheless. Slightly disturbing news – the Queen Mother stumbled (stumbled, she didn’t fall) coming out of somewhere. She then, later, made it into her car unaided. This was sandwiched between riots in the Middle East and the current Kumbh Mela festival. Disturbing that this made the news at all. Sheesh!

Spring cleaned

Tidy, neat and organised. Took some time away from this wretched machine to do a bit of tidying up. You know the type of thing, the stuff you keep saying you’ll do but never actually get around to, well we’ve done it. Mind you my desk could do with a clear out, I currently have an ambulance on standby in case the paper tower sitting next to me should topple. Think we are going to watch a video tonight (no DVD in this house..yet). What to watch? Fight Club? Mary Poppins? Indiana Jones trilogy? Hmmmm what else did we get for Xmas?

Professional

No I ain’t a professional designer (no stop, I’m not…!) and I don’t work entirely in the web domain, but I’m gonna stand up for my profession – Technical Communications. We are the people who write the documentation. We are the people who write the online help. We are the people who long to be software developers or web designers. Actually strike that last bit… Usability, design, writing skills (grammar, consistency etc) and the ability to analysis information from widely differing sources and present all this to users of software and services. Easy huh. Makes this web coding business look like a walk in the park.

Weekend looming. Nephew in hospital (in surgery at the moment) so hospital visit on Saturday. Pop in and see my parents (remembering to pick up any piano lesson type stuff from their loft) then maybe a trip to the cinema in the evening… Unbreakable probably. Sunday – quiet, relaxing, working. Typical day really. http://www.desktopimage.com (need Flash 5). Drool….
