16 years old

Every year this gets a bit scarier to admit.

16 years ago the internet was a small place, hand crafted HTML ruled the waves, and the surf was more a gentle swell than the tsunamis we now have to negotiate whenever we dip our toes.

Even now I’m still not sure how much of this hobby is vanity, how much is curiosity, how much is a desire for validation, nor how much it’s just because I can. It’s never been a focus, and that’s probably why I still do it.

I published my first piece of writing 16 years ago today.

That means, in the UK, my blog can now, in no particular order:

  • Drink beer or cider with a meal in a pub or hotel, but still can’t buy it.
  • Fly a glider.
  • Have sex, gay or straight, as long as the other blog is also 16+.
  • Join the armed forces.
  • Earn the minimum wage.
  • Choose a doctor.
  • Get married (with parental consent).

All of which is really, really weird.

  1. Um. Happy anniversary? (honestly. that’s awesome. I authored my first personal website in 1995, but only started blogging in 2004, so that’s a pretty amazing achievement and one that should be celebrated! Yay you! Long may you run!)

  2. …and on the subject of that first post, I wear sunglasses a lot more since I had my eyes done and ditched my specs (um. 2008, ish). I think there are two reasons for this: because I now can without needing to faff about with contacts, but also because I seem to like hiding behind a frame. I consistently pick very dark, ideally mirrored, wraparounds. Go figure.

  3. Cheers matey! And that first post is a bit cringey in parts, how I’ve grown! 🙂 I’m about to get new specs and probably my first prescription sunglasses, I do like them dark but don’t really suit the wraparounds… interesting.

  4. I’m impressed! (I’m still amazed that D4D’s been going 13 years too) How time flies when you’re having fun, eh?

I didn’t do personal sites at the same time as I did commercial ones – my first commercial work was 1996, and how the *chuff* is that 19 bloody years?!?!?!?!?

What’s even scarier is when you compare where your life was at that point to where it is now. Quite the eye-opener…
