I was at the Skunk Anansie gig last night and there were a lot of tattoos on display. A lot of them on women including one full lower arm piece. It got me thinking.

To have a large piece of ink on display, pretty much all the time, takes an attitude and lifestyle but which came first?

Was the “I don’t care what anyone thinks” attitude always there? Or was the tattoo part of gaining that attitude? Doubtless it was somewhere in-between but is there something there about being able to develop a mindset that maybe is sometimes hidden? A way of making a bold decision to make (force?) a change in your personality?

I think that it can take big events for some people to re-focus on themselves and take a step closer to who they want to be, and whilst it wasn’t the original reason behind my first tattoo, it’s certainly a lot closer tied to my thinking this time around.

Or maybe I’m just too old to care anymore.

  1. I’m not sure that people always have a tattoo because they “don’t care what anyone thinks”. In fact, I’m sure the reasoning is often quite the opposite – more that they can make a statement without using verbal communication. It sounds to me that you might be thinking along the same lines with your new tattoo.

  2. I wonder how many people have a large tattoo first time – could be that many of them start with something less extreme and then decide they want to stand out more.

  3. graybo – I think you are right re: my new tattoo, it is a statement, made by me, for me but which I’m happy to have made.

    Z – good point, is the first tattoo an act of rebellion? (mine was).

  5. My tattoo was to mark my 21st birthday, I’ll be getting one next year to celebrate my 30th (eek!)

    My tattoo is sentimental to me, musical notes of a song very dear to my mother & I and my birth date is incorporated into it. Don’t think my second one will such an effect, a butterfly no doubt.

    My tattoo was not to rebel but to mark and occassion and actually wanted to feel what getting a tattoo was like!!!
