A good society

I love you guys. Seriously, you continue to inspire and provoke and without YOU (yes, even YOU) then this blog would have died a long time ago. Specifically looking at the comments left yesterday, I’m dead chuffed that you took my somewhat hastily written post and turned it into a discussion about the current decline in social values. Take THAT Jakob! OK, platitudes out of the way, I wanted to pick up on something Blue Witch said, namely that the internet is creating a largely insular society: Isn’t it a pity that people have time to spend on things like this, but not on befriending, for example, the lonely old person who lives next door but one to them? Just …

I think I’m safe, for now. Wherever I go it isn’t long before they find me. It seems The Mezin are connected to every aspect of humanity, from culture and religion to our most advanced technology I have to be more careful contacting all of you. When I began I thought I could safely speak about his writings and perhaps save us all… but now it seems I will have to find a more subtle way to share his visions. If this is the first message you have received from me do not give up hope! There are others that have gone before you, the way has been found, you only need to search and you will find the answers …

Tech Writer Blog Directory

Ahh the joy of site stats and referrers. With them I may not have spotted that some kind soul had added this humble blog to the Tech Writer Blog Directory. Whoever it was, thanks! (yes, I’m guessing it was Tom). I’ve updated my details, stopping short of listing all of my websites.. To everyone else, if you are a technical writer, or just work in the field of technical communications, and if you have a blog that should be added head on over there and add it. It’s a Wiki page and is open to all to be edited. I’m a big fan of directories (I run the Scottish Blogs directory, as finding other blogs in a ‘niche’ is always …

Who ARE you people?!

I continue to dip in and out of the current crop of social networking.. umm.. websites … applications? … ummm webapps.. or however the hell they are collectively known (I’m desperately trying NOT to use the “Web 2.0” tag here). None of them have particularly stuck with me, at least not yet, and they all share one common theme. They all have their own little quirks and frustrations. One of which seems to be a common amongst most of them, although it’s demonstrated in different forms. I guess it might just be me, being the common point here, but ultimately my annoyance boils down to one thing, over and over again. I don’t know who anyone is. And yes, I …

The Best Man

In a rather lovely turn of events… ohh god, “rather lovely”, I can’t say that… in fact I’m not sure what I want to say about what it is that I want to say something about, bear with me. The basic facts are thus; my good friend Stuart is getting hitched, he phoned me last week and asked me to be his best man. Simple enough. It’s going to be a small and informal affair, with close friends and family only on the day itself (a Friday), and a larger reception on the Sunday evening. I’m truly honoured to be asked, as I’ve known Stuart for .. blimey.. 17 years. We met at Hospital Radio Lennox, as we were both …

Bloody Typical

A busy weekend planned, and I wake up and manage to tweak a muscle in my back. Agony. I can find one comfortable position, and I’m currently typing this on the laptop with one hand, the other raised up over the back of the sofa. It’s comfy. For now. I did manage to get one thing done, but everything else is now on hold. Naturally next week is a mega-busy week at work and I’ve just started the next 10 week block at jogScotland… no run tomorrow though. So, I’m slightly pissed off. Just thought I’d mention it…

This, that and the other

Yesterday’s post highlighted something for me, namely that I really REALLY need to get the miniblog area of my sidebar sorted out. At the moment it pulls from a del.icio.us account but that means you can’t comment on it, which kind of defeats the purpose for me. The miniblog is supposed to be just that, a smaller ‘blog’ to which I can post shorter snippets and links, allowing me to focus the ‘main’ posts on longer, better thought out pieces. I’ve tried a few plugins but I guess I need to crank out the hand coding monkey again. Oh well, I’ve got one website to finish then I’m gonna take a break from client work to sort out a few …

Whilst I remember…

… the contact form now works. … you HAVE to read mike’s post about blogging book deals. … Pownce (It’s POUNCE!!! ARGGH!! And yes, I have 6 invites, see the first item in this post..). … John Smeaton, legend or laughable? I reckon his “this is Glesga, if you [the terrorists] come ‘ere, we’ll just set aboot ye” line isn’t a bad thing. The people will stand! … Jaiku, it’s like haiku but it’s not, and I can’t write them, so this isn’t. Yes. ANOTHER social web app thingy doo dah. … MEGA iPhone review, and that’s the last I mention it, for now (ohh ok, here’s a tiny short review). … Nike Triax Vapor 300 looks weird, but apparently …

How do you do yours?

Have you ever watched someone performing a basic task and wondered why you don’t do it the same way? I’ve just witnessed, from the corner of my eye, someone brushing their teeth. The fact they are brushing their teeth at work isn’t the issue here, although I have to commend them on their commitment to maintaining their exemplary dental hygiene even if it is a LITTLE bit weird to have brought in an electric toothbrush, floss and mouthwash. Instead I’m wondering why he was brushing his teeth the way he was, in particular, and this is all based on a couple of glances as I’m not in the habit of staring at men when they are in the bathroom regardless …

Terror! Inept?

Some brief thoughts that sparked through my head after the “terror” attack on Glasgow Airport. 1. Glasgow, my home city. All of a sudden it’s close to home. Doubly so as I drive right past the runway every day on my way to work every day. 2. Glasgow, isn’t a capital city, why didn’t they hit Edinburgh? 3. If they HAD gotten the vehicle inside it would have been awful.. queues of people waiting to checkin would’ve been about 15 feet from the doorway the car hit. 4. Ummm the car was too wide for the doors? 5. Ummmm they only used one car, and were targetting one end of a long narrow building. Even if they HAD have gotten …
