A nameless person (well he does have a name but I’m not disclosing it here, he has been popping up in the comments recently though) and I had an MSN chat about THAT article today. Note: This is edited, mainly to make me look better … ¿Dónde están los banjos? says: He reminds of a cave man looking at a glacier and saying “Ug no like hard-cold water. Ug will push hard-cold water back to hills” ¿Dónde están los banjos? says: You no likey bloggy? You no ready bloggy then. The badger faced, turd juggler. Gordon says: Maybe it’s because the ‘masses’ are discovering that journalism isn’t actually that hard. It’s just processing information (research) and writing about it. ¿Dónde …

Resolutions

Two and a half months in, are YOU sticking to your New Year resolutions? I didn’t make any but I’m beginning to think I should have. Maybe it’s a reaction to my current workload, but I sometimes think I’d be better served if I had something to focus on, a hobby other than this one. Admittedly I am trying to be more organised, I’m pausing more often to consider whether what I am currently doing is what I SHOULD be doing, and I’m trying not to over commit on any side projects to ensure I have sometime left for me. At least that’s what I hoped I was doing but my problem is when I DO have some free time …

Bloggies 2006

Right, I’ve been doing something thinking about how I can win a Bloggie next year. I reckon there are several areas I need to tackle, but as I’m aiming for Best-Kept-Secret the first thing I need to do is increase traffic, and get noticed by all the right people. So, with that in mind I’ve come up with a sure fire strategy, and as we all know there are two rules for success: 1. Never tell everything you know.

Red Rag

Slept in this morning so had to rush to make the train, never the best start to the day. I’m then greeted, via the wonderful Metro newspaper (“the internet: printed” could be their slogan) with the news that Network Rail is set to pay executive bonuses despite those self same executives “forgetting about return journeys” in a recent ticket offer. There is plenty of detail on this story if you don’t know it but the bit that REALLY got my blood boiling was this: Last year John Armitt, the chief executive, received a bonus of £112,000 and this year was looking forward to £150,000 on top of his salary of £468,000. And these poor executives are moaning that they should …

Bloggies 2005

The results are in. But before I pick out some of my choices I thought I’d take a moment to jot down why I’m quite interested in the results. Quite simply, I want to win one. No I’m kidding (well kinda), despite all the easy arguments against this kind of thing I think it’s valuable to have ONE set of awards to represent this thing called blog. The Bloggies is where we should be pointing the journalists, where the focus should be, and whilst they are never going to be completely representative they do at least offer both a reasonably wide range of TYPES of blog but they also all have one crucial thing in common (for the most part). …

Stupid is..

I’ve received several of these emails over the past few days, all have the same subject line: “Please open the Microsoft word document attachment to read this offer in Japanese” Now granted I am slightly fascinated by the culture of Japan and the Far East but, come on. If you want to infect my system with a nasty virus you are gonna have to work a LOT harder than that.

Lutonian

I have to admit that I was a bit mystified when I read about this in the paper this morning. Luton, the town, ran an online poll to find the “Greatest Words Ever Spoken” with the results published today (although the poll still appears to be open). Apparently the winner would be inscribed on a wall of the passenger arrivals walkway in London Luton Airport. Aside: Tell me, why is it called LONDON Luton Airport? Luton is almost the same distance from London, as Edinburgh is from Glasgow. Most odd, probably something to do with FAA regulations or something (CBATG). It was with great interest that I read the article, pausing only to consider what I’d vote for as the …

Weekender

Well done Coco. Well done Scotland (hey we WON the second half 19 – 8!). Ohh and there was that article in the newspaper (scroll down a bit for that). Aside from that it was a fairly quiet weekend. Saturday saw me multi-tasking like a woman; finishing off some work, dealing with stroppy clients on the phone (kidding!), and getting the house into some sort of order as we had friends over on Saturday night. I enjoyed a stroll to the shop on Sunday morning, glorious it was, very cold but the sun was blazing and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. Headed through to Dumbarton to pick up my father-in-laws birthday present which will get shipped out to Spain …

Plum Line

So, as she’s finally managed to figure out where the ON switch is (although I think quarsan might have had something to do with it) I can confirm that yes, I am the evil genius behind the new design over at My Boyfriend Is A Twat. It’s still under going some final tweaks, but it’s almost there. Whilst the design is hardly ground breaking I think I probably got more out of the experience than Zoë did. It’s very easy to design a website for yourself, as you intimately know your own likes and dislikes. Designing for a “client” is, of course, completely different. Not only do their tastes sometimes clash with your own, but they have a certain way …

Sublime light

The scene: A rather bemused man shuffles onto the darkened stage. He’s dressed in a bad suit, is carrying a few extra pounds (or 20), but seems like someone who you’d describe as “quite a nice guy”. He approaches the isolation of the spotlight, and steps up to the lone microphone. “Er… hello” he says, not really sure where to begin. He pauses and peers out into the haze that envelops the audience. “Well I see some new faces out there, so welcome. Emm.. feel free to have a look around… ohh and be careful where you step, but don’t worry, there’s nothing dangerous in here” ~ That idea worked better in my head. So yes, hello, good evening and …
